Vestibular rehabilitation is a type of physical therapy that uses exercises to help with balance and dizziness, and other symptoms associated with vestibular disorders: vertigo, imbalance, posture, and vision. The goal is to improve balance and mobility, and reduce the risk of falls.
Vestibular Rehabilitation exercises can include:
- Repositioning of the “crystals” : Used to reposition displaced otoconia (calcium carbonate crystals) in the inner ear. Advanced treatments may involve additional positions or modifications based on the patient’s specific needs.
- Gaze stabilization The ability to keep your eyes still while your head is moving
- Balance training Activities that enhance proprioception and balance, often incorporating dynamic movements
- Mobility training Activities that improve the ability to walk and turn your head, or “walk and talk”
